Real Beauty From Dove And Its Parody

Dove has a Real Beauty campaign going on right now – you probably have seen or heard about it. This is what they say:

“Only 4% of women around the world consider themselves beautiful. At Dove, we are committed to creating a world where beauty is a source of confidence, not anxiety.”

They created this video about a test they did to see how women describe themselves.

There is some controversy about the campaign. Really, what large campaign doesn’t have controversy?! I think they are on the right track in the fact that women will not describe themselves as beautiful. I don’t know the reasons; maybe they don’t think they are or maybe they don’t want to come across as stuck up. Maybe women tend to place more emphasis on inner beauty instead. What do you think?

beautiful women

Anyhow. Cladwell created a parody video of the Dove Real Beauty video with men! They said:

Only 4% of women around the world consider themselves beautiful, while 94% of MEN think they are above average. At Cladwell, we are committed to making men’s delusions a reality.

I knew exactly where they were going, but it’s still funny. If it gets a bit boring because of the repetition skip to about 2:00 minutes in the video so you can see the differences in the “sketches.”

I’d love to hear what you think! Do men think they are better looking than other people see them?

5 Crafts You Can Make With Egg Cartons

Has anyone NOT made a caterpillar out of an egg carton? It’s an easy and fun craft that can be done with many different ages and however complicated you want it to be. Butterflies and bees are popular and fun too. Here are 5 other crafts you can make with egg cartons.

egg carton craft ideas from Mommy Needs a Break

Here’s an animal I would not have thought to use an egg carton for – a dragon. This video shows how to make a dragon puppet with an egg carton. I think kids would enjoy making it and playing with it.

How about an egg carton bus that they can put toys in and drive around?

Here’s a good classroom craft for the fall – egg carton apples:

I’ve go to admit that this egg carton kitty is pretty cute.

Banana Day Facts And Fun

The third wednesday of April is Banana Day; and even though it was totally made up by college students we can still have fun with it.

banana day

I’ve never tried these interesting banana tips so do so at your own risk. If you have tried one of these I’d love to hear about it in a comment – ’cause frankly I’ve never heard most of them…and it’s guys giving them so I’ve got to wonder.

On the serious side here are 10 Health Benefits of bananas:

On the totally fun side my kids and I love to laugh at the Minions from Despicable Me. In this short video we learned that they really love bananas:

And then we laugh at The Banana Song – every time we watch it. I had to share it with you.

Do you have any bananas at your house? Any way you want to celebrate Banana Day?

Siblings Of Kids With Autism

April is Autism Awareness Month. Unless you live with someone with autism you don’t realize how much it affects the whole family, including the siblings. These videos are from the unique angle of a brother or sister of an autistic child.

From a young boys perspective:

From a 18 year old view:
This video made me smile…and get teary eyed. He talks then plays a song and then he talks some more. If you don’t want to listen to the song make sure you skip through until he starts talking again. It blessed my heart.

From a grown ladies perspective: This one is sad, yet happy to watch. It’s sad because she tells the story of her grown brother that was locked away all of his life due to no one knowing how to deal with autism. It’s happy because she found him and visited him after 50 years. She rejoices in the advances that medical science and the public has made in this area.

I love the stories of how special people touch so many lives, and it starts with the family and siblings. Do you have a special person in your life?

Rainbow Day Celebrations

happy rainbow day

April 3rd is “Find A Rainbow Day.” Why did I not know about this day before!?! It certainly sounds like a fun day to celebrate. There are many, many ways you can celebrate rainbows.

First the scientific route and what makes a rainbow:

Now that we have the boring stuff out of the way… FOOD!

I didn’t realize how many foods you could make into a rainbow theme! YoYoMax12 on YouTube has a whole playlist of rainbow themed foods. If you click the word “Playlist” at the bottom left of this video widget you can see thumbnails of the different video and choose which one you want to watch. The videos include unicorn poop, panna cotta, as well as normal things like cakes, cookies, and bread in the colors of the rainbow.

We can’t leave out sports so here is how to do the rainbow in soccer:

Lastly, songs with “rainbow” in the title! Again – if you want to scroll through the playlist and pick a video to watch click the word “playlist” in the bottom left corner.

Just in case you don’t know the colors of the rainbow I’ll leave you with this final tip. If you remember Roy G. Biv you’ll always know the colors of the rainbow and the order they go in - red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, and violet. It’s great for impressing your kids too.

Did you ever make rainbow themed food? Do you have any special rainbow memories you can share with us?

Magic Tricks To Impress Your Kids [Video]

March 29 is Smoke and Mirrors Day. That made me think of magic tricks and how much fun it is to play them on my kids. It’s also good to have some up your sleeve for times when you have an unexpected wait; you can distract the kids and make the wait time go much faster.

Here’s some easy sleight of hand tricks that don’t need special equipment and could be done just about anywhere.

All you need is a penny or small coin for this old, but good one. Make a coin disappear:

I think this one is clever yet so simple. He uses pencils, but mentions that you could use French fries or some other small objects. Crazy pencil trick:

This one might need a little practice with a rubber band, but looks like fun. Rubber band through thumb:

I’ve found that it’s fun to awe my kids with what I can do, then after they beg a little bit I show them how to do it. Then they spend a while practicing it themselves. And that’s one of the ways I distract my children or nieces & nephews when we have to wait for something and there’s nothing fun to do.

How about you? Any tricks to distract kids? Any magic tricks you like to do?

Chickens And Poultry Day

poultry day

There are many serious ways to celebrate Poultry Day.

  • You could look up what “poultry” actually is: “Poultry meat is domestic or wild fowl that is grown or harvested for human consumption.” from
  • You could read about the best ways to raise ducks, geese, chicken, or turkeys; and maybe even emu, ostriches, and peacocks.
  • You could find new recipes for ways to cook poultry.
  • You could find out that there is a Poultry festival in Versailles, Ohio, that is celebrated in June – not March.
  • You could even learn that Poultry Day is the same as National Chocolate Caramel Day so it should be easy to plan a main course and dessert for March 19.

Instead of being serious you could celebrate Poultry Day by being silly.

If you like jazz –  sing along with Ain’t Nobody Here But Us Chickens:

Fan of the Muppets? Watch The Swedish Chef prepare Spring Chicken – emphasis on the spring:

And don’t forget to do the chicken dance on Poultry Day. Although I don’t think I would have wanted to get all dressed up for a wedding and dance like a chicken – these people had fun with it:

How are you going to celebrate Poultry Day? Do you like to do the chicken dance?

St Patrick’s Day Crafts [Video]

St Patrick’s Day is an Irish holiday that is celebrated around the world and is very popular in the United States. It was originally a very religious holiday and the pubs were closed. Changed a bit over the years, hasn’t it? However you celebrate the day it’s fun to add some green to your house and wardrobe during the cold winter month of March. Here are 3 simple crafts to incorporate some green in your accessories and decorations for St. Patrick’s Day.

st patricks day crafts

Rather than spending a ton of money on St. Patty’s Day decor, I think my girls would love to craft this festive paper ring in honor of St. Patrick’s Day. Don’t have all of these supplies?  Not to worry, I think you could make do without the fancy paper punch and glue dots by cutting out flowers with scissors and using some other kind of glue.

Most kids LOVE to use paint, and with this handprint shamrock clover they can put the paint right on their hands and make something every mom & dad will want.

Make your home the envy of the Irish with these adorable mini St. Patrick’s Day hats.  While I think the little hats are a neat idea, but I don’t think I would wear it in my hair. On my table, desk, or shelf would be fine, but not my head.

Do you decorate for St Patrick’s Day? Dress up? Drink green beer?

Leave a comment and tell us how you celebrate it.

Proof Reading Is ‘Sew’ Important

If you’ve used any word processing program you no that spell checker is only a minimal help and there are many mistakes that it can’t catch. Nothing is better than proofreading your important work several times yourself – and then asking someone else to check before you publish it.
